Description

 Original 1st printing 13&7/8 x 28" cardboard boxing-style concert poster for British Invasion legends the Kinks appearing with the Beach Boys and ("the") Orleans at the Allentown (PA) Fairgrounds on 8/20/1972.

 Thick cardboard stock letterpress poster (printed by Posters. Inc. of Philadelphia) is in used (B-) condition; there are three (3) hard horizontal bends/creases traversing the poster across "THE KINKS", "SUN.AUG 20" and "BRING BLANKETS", along with series of randomly-placed staple holes and tiny wedge pulls, a dime-sized hole/wedge pull in the "e" of "Orleans" and a slightly smaller hole in the lower right corner (above "Allentown" in the ticket outlet area), a hard 6" diagonal bend in the lower left corner, a couple of vertical tears with a few small bends running along the top margin, a few stray surface scuffs and dings scattered here and there... it's pretty obvious that this example was pulled down from public display at the time of the shows, it has all the tell-tale signs of a somewhat hasty removal.

 Conditional issues aside, it's still a pretty unusual/uncommon early-'70s Kinks/Beach Boys regional concert artifact that you don't see every day. Apparently there was a bit of a "situation" backstage with Ray Davies' wardrobe (thanks to Frank Lima on the Ray Davies forum for the colorful description);

"August 20, 1972 KinKs Play The Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown Pa, with the Beach Boys, Dan the Fan arrives there from Long Island at 6:30 AM to be greeted by KinKs road manager and part of their krew. A road mishap has delayed members of the crew from arriving and Dan along with a friend are recruited to help unload equipment from trucks on to the stage. Early in the afternoon with equipment on the stage Dan is fiddling with the Beach Boys drum kit laying down a steady beat when he hears guitars join in from behind and before he knows what's happening he is jamming with the Beach Boys to Do It Again with Dennis Wilson watching from the sidelines. Later in the day After The KinKs arrive and sound check; at some point shortly before show Ray goes to get in to show wardrobe only to find his white Blazer that he has been wearing on stage of this show has been stolen??? Lots of crap goes down in the dressing room that I can not divulge, including the near decapitation of Dan the Fan by accident LOL...but thanks to Dan and the KinKs road manager the wonderful late Kenny Jones, normality resumes, the white Blazer is found and the show goes on and The KinKs totally ROCK OUT the 18,000 plus audience with an amazing show, I have said this before but 1972 is my favorite touring year for the kinks...!"
