Description

Original 1st printing 8&1/2 x 11" monochrome concert/event flyer for the Grateful Dead and the Wildflower appearing in a benefit (a fundraiser for the Straight Theatre in Haight-Ashbury), held at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA on 5/19/1966. (*event also featured performances by beat poet Michael McClure, along with Ed Bullins and Black Arts West and the Outfit).

Art by Jacob, image (full color poster) is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 106 (plate 2.16).

Thin flat stock flyer is in decent/used (B/B-) condition; the upper left corner is a bit chewed up with a small wedge tear and a piece of clear tape, along with small pieces of clear tape in the upper right corner and bottom center margin, hard diagonal bends in the lower left and upper/lower right corners, a bit of edge creasing/toning along the top margin, a tiny pen scratch in the first "0" of "$2.00" and a few minor handling dings and tiny pin-prick scuffs here and there, otherwise OK... still presentable.

VERY, VERY scarce Grateful Dead artifact from the Avalon- this was the band's VERY FIRST appearance at the venue, pre-dating the FD 10 "Hayfever" show by a week. I have had the poster from this event several times over the years, this is the FIRST example of the flyer that I have come across.
