Pair of 1966/67 Avalon Ballroom concert posters featuring Big Brother & the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin);
First is an original 1st printing 13&7/8 x 20" concert poster for BBHC appearing with the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Orkustra at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA from 5/5-7/1967.
Art by Rick Griffin with a photo by Bob Seidemann, image ("Motherload") is # 60 in the Family Dog/Avalon series.
Medium flat index stock poster is in used (B-/C+) condition; heavy corner wear, including a large wedge out of the upper right margin/corner, a fair amount of discoloration/fading along the right margin, numerous scuffs/scrapes, holes, etc... definitely a well-worn specimen.
The other poster is an nofficial/unauthorized 1966 bootleg (murky "Bindweed Press" credit/no dot screen in FD logo) printing 14 x 19&3/4" concert poster for Big Brother & the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin -her debut performances with the band) appearing with Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA on 6/24-25/1966.
Art by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, image ("Zig-Zag Man") is # 14 in the Family Dog/Avalon series.
Medium-thin flat vellum stock poster is in decent/used (B/B- to B-) condition; tack holes in all four corners, several stray edge tears and creases scattered around the outer margin area, along with a fair amount of handling/creasing and a few tiny pin-prick scuffs/spots hiding within the image area and other assorted minor issues here and there; definitely well-worn, but still all there. Quite possibly the first-ever documented bootleg rock poster.
While these are definitely on the used side, they remain a charming pair of 1960's-era Janis Joplin/Big Brother posters from the Avalon.
