Description

Original 1st printing 5&1/2 x 7&1/4" blank* reverse concert handbill for the Grateful Dead appearing with Quicksilver Messenger Service and Blue Cheer (*not sure about B.C.) at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco, CA on 1/17/1968. (*with typewritten letter and canceled 6 cent stamp- see below)

Art by Allen "Gut" Terk, image ("Ben Franklin's Birthday") is featured in the Art of Rock on page 181 (plate 2.169).

Medium flat index stock handbill is in decent (B/B-) condition; there is a bit of toning to the paper, in addition to a couple of well-hidden staple holes in the four corner tips, a few thin diagonal creases in the lower right margin, a touch of edge wear, a couple of stray pin-prick spots here and there and there is a typed-out message and canceled FDR 6-cent stamp on the reverse (see photo), but it is still in presentable shape. Very sweet little note from a mom to her son on the reverse.

This show was also the unofficial opening night of the Carousel as a band-managed venue. Check out a GREAT-sounding recording of the show HERE:
