Description

Original 1st printing 14 x 20" concert poster for the Grateful Dead in their New York City debut at the Cafe Au Go-Go in Greenwich Village from 6/1-10/1967 (Deadbase lists the dates as June 6-11).

Art by Daniel Fennell, with a photo by Gene Anthony and the Christ figure re-purposed from a painting by Andrea Mantegna (*Thanks, Steve!), image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 305 (plate 3.163).

Medium-thick flat vellum stock poster ihas been professionally restored to excellent (B+) condition; a punch hole and a tear in the top center margin have been repaired, along with a small tear just to the right of Jesus' head with a pull on the reverse that has been reinforced, along with a couple of pin hole fills/edge tear repair... looks really nice, very professional restoration work. There remains a bit of light handling wear, a few pin-prick surface spots here and there and a very light set of tape shadows on the reverse, but overall it's pretty sharp. (*I have the "before" photo available upon request)

A frequently-requested Grateful Dead image from the AOR, the interior gatefold of the Dead's 1974 "Steal Your Face" album has a photo of the band standing in front of a wall in NYC plastered with this very same poster (see photo- c. Rosie McGee 1967)
