Description

Original 1st printing 8&1/2 x 11" concert flyer for the ("Amazing") Charlatans appearing with Jefferson Airplane at California Hall in San Francisco, CA on 1/8/1966.

Art by Charlatans lead singer George Hunter, image ("Rock & Roll Biplane") pre-dates the numbering system implemented by the Family Dog when Chet Helms took over several weeks after this show; image is designated FD-IV in the Eric King guide and has a hand-written note from Eric on the reverse side regarding the item's provenance.

Medium-thin flat stock flyer is in very good (B/B+) condition; there are small nip tears in the top center and lower right margins (four total), along with a bit of mild edge creasing along the lower right margin, a couple of tiny corner-tip bumps/pressure creases, a tiny pin-prick spot in the bottom center margin, a whisper of handling wear (mostly around the outer margin area) and the aforementioned EK note (in VERY light pencil) on the reverse side, otherwise fine.

As an interesting historical footnote; this event ran concurrently with the 1/8/1966 Fillmore Acid Test, so the promoters for both shows (Family Dog/Merry Pranksters) arranged for transportation between the two venues so neither would be undersold. Allegedly, temporary FD caretakers/promoters (and future Grateful Dead managers) Danny Rifkin and Rock Scully left their own show to check out the Fillmore and never made it back. A fascinating artifact with a VERY cool back story!
