Description

Original 1st printing 5&3/8 x 8&1/2" band-issued/hand-stamped concert handbill for Big Brother & the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin) appearing "With One of Chicago's Greatest Bluesmen", Howlin' Wolf at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA on 9/23-24/1966 (*show cancelled).

Art by Dennis Nolan, image corresponds with # 27 in the Family Dog/Avalon series and is featured (with a "Red Dog Saloon" imprint) in the Art of Rock book on page 90 (plate 2.3).

Thin flat stock handbill is in decent/used (B/B-) condition; there is a small staple wedge pull (about 3/4") in the upper left corner, along with tack holes in the other corners (and one in the upper right margin), a bit of uneven toning around the outer margin area, a fair amount of fading to the red ink on the rubber stamped info, a few soft handling creases here and there, a thin horizontal bend along the lower left margin and a thin strip of mounting tape residue along the reverse-side top margin, otherwise OK.

ULTRA-uncommon version of this early Big Brother handbill, this one almost never turns up.
