Original 1st printing 5&1/2 x 8&1/2" double-sided handbill for "TRIPS 196?", a 3-day multi-media event and concert featuring the Grateful Dead appearing with the Loading Zone, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, the Answer and MUCH more.
Artist unknown/not credited (printed by Tilghman Press of Oakland), full-color image is featured in the Art of Rock on page 186 (plate 2.187), this is the monochrome handbill.
Thin flat stock handbill is in very good to excellent (B/B+ to B+) condition; there are tack holes in all four corners and in the top center margin, along with a small thin diagonal bend in the lower right corner, a bit of light handling wear/creasing, a hint of light surface dirt, a well-camouflaged tiny stress bend or two hiding within the image area and a hint of scuffing on the reverse side, otherwise fine.
INCREDIBLY SCARCE early-'66 Grateful Dead image from the Art of Rock (first one of these I have come across in 75+ auctions), these shows marked the Dead's return to San Francisco after a couple of months spent down in Los Angeles.
As an added bonus, this example has been HAND-SIGNED (in pencil) by none other than head Prankster Ken Kesey himself (signature personally obtained by consignor). COOL!!!!
