Description

Original 16 x 16" circa 1989/90 hand-airbrushed (embellished with additional gold/silver/black pen accents and a few spots of white paint splatter) original stencil art on (heavy Crescent art board) featuring the album cover design for the Grateful Dead's 1981 live album "Reckoning".

Art by (and SIGNED and marked A/P (Artist's Proof) 27/50 by) Rick Griffin, this image was part of a series of low-run/limited batch stencil-based airbrush paintings that were each individually hand-done by Rick (in his un-ventilated garage), featuring different combinations of various 1960's-inspired (and beyond) icons. Most are simply art pieces featuring assorted Griffin "totems" (eyeballs, hopi masks), but this is the only one I know of that features a fully-realized Grateful Dead image.

As the story goes, a good number of these stencil paintings have better or worse registration, depending on when Rick did them. Some (such as this one) are very tight/crisp, while others can be a bit more "wobbly". This particular example was likely designated as an Artist's Proof by Rick due to the bit of white paint splatter around the skull's eye sockets (it actually creates a really cool astral effect), but the addition of the extra gold/silver/black accents more than make up for it.

This example has a few small edge/surface dings, along with a few stray white paint spots here and there and there are a couple of thin tape-residue marks on the reverse side, but overall it is in FANTASTIC shape.

An absolutely STUNNING-looking ORIGINAL RICK GRIFFIN ARTWORK featuring one of Rick's most popular Grateful Dead designs.
