Description

Original 1st printing 5&1/2 x 8&1/2" concert handbill for Jefferson Airplane appearing with Big Brother & the Holding Company (pre-Janis) at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, CA on 2/19/1966.

Art by Wes Wilson, image ("Tribal Stomp") is # 1 in the Family Dog/Avalon series and is printed on white stock (OHB-A in the Eric King guide)

Medium-thin flat stock handbill is in (physically) excellent (B+) condition; just the slightest amount of light handling/edge creasing and a stray pin-prick spot or two here and there, otherwise OK... however, this particular example has been HAND-COLORED in a variety of different color magic markers (yellow, red, green, black and blue) right around the time of the show by someone who grabbed the handbills while walking down Telegraph Avenue.

On a side note, I have seen an example of the 1st printing poster from this show (in a private collection) that was similarly hand-colored (different colors for each letter)- the owner of that piece relayed to me that some of the posters and handbills were set aside for the express purpose of coloring, particularly for the assorted children who had parents who were part of the scene... "We gave them a stack of posters and a bunch of markers and told them to go to town..." (this one was not colored by one of the kids- see above)

MEGA-COOL and VERY unique early Family Dog artifact with a really interesting look!
