Description

Original 1st printing 14&3/4 x 17&1/4" concert poster for the Grateful Dead appearing with Jerry Pond at the Matrix in San Francisco, CA from 11/28-12/1/1966.

Art by R. Lyons ("R.A.L. Cards"), central image borrowed from Heinrich Kley), image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 162 (plate 2.108).

Medium-thick flat vellum stock poster is in decent/used (B/B- to B-) condition; the poster has a moderate degree of toning to the paper with a series of light surface chips/tiny scrapes throughout the image ares/margins (only affecting the white parts of the paper- the green ink is miraculously unaffected), along with a series of randomly-placed tiny pin/staple holes, a fairly decent-sized diagonal bend in the upper right margin/corner, a few tiny dings and nip tears scattered around the outer margin, a soft stain on the first "D" of "Dead" and other little bits of minor wear and tear.... as you may have correctly guessed, this example was taken down from public display within a week of the shows by the consignor (a Matrix regular from the neighborhood), who had held onto it ever since he removed it from a phone pole in late 1966. 100% original San Francisco pedigree.

While this one may not sit at the absolute top of the conditional heap, it's still a presentable aged example of this somewhat hard-to-find late-'66 Dead poster with IMPECCABLE provenance. Stream the 11/29 show HERE:
