Description

Original 1st printing 14 x 20" concert poster for the Grateful Dead in their New York City debut at the Cafe Au Go-Go in Greenwich Village from 6/1-10/1967 (Deadbase lists the dates as June 6-11).

Art by Daniel Fennell, with a photo by Gene Anthony and the Christ figure re-purposed from a painting by Andrea Mantegna (*Thanks, Steve!), image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 305 (plate 3.163).

Medium-thick flat vellum stock poster is in very good (B/B+) condition; there are a series of staple holes in the "T" of "The", in the upper right corner, in the "Ca" of "Cafe" and in the lower right corner, along with a series of very thin vertical stress bends hiding within the "Grateful Dead" lettering, a light amount of surface dirt, a pair of soft pin-prick stains in the upper left margin, a touch of handling wear, a bit of horizontal "tire tread" scuffing on the reverse and a hint of edge/corner-tip wear, otherwise fine.

An oft-requested Grateful Dead image from the AOR, the interior gatefold of the Dead's 1974 "Steal Your Face" album has a photo of the band standing in front of a wall in NYC plastered with this very same poster (see photo- c. Rosie McGee 1967)
