Description

Original 1st printing 14&1/2 x 23" concert/event poster for the Newport Pop Festival, held at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, CA from 8/3-4/1968.

Poster lists appearances by Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, the Byrds, Steppenwolf, Tiny Tim, Sonny & Cher, Things to Come, Illinois Speed Press, James Cotton Blues Band, Counrty Joe & the Fish, Blue Cheer, Electric Flag, Iron Butterfly, Eric Burdon & the Animals, Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Chambers Brothers.

Design by Geller & Butler Advertising, medium flat/smooth index stock poster is in decent/used (B/B- to B-) condition; there is a semi-flattened horizontal center fold/crease, along with a small piece of the upper left corner tip missing, a small tape pull, small scratches/stains and a couple of tears in the upper left margin, a few scuffs/thin bends scattered along the upper margin area, a diagonal tape shadow in the upper right corner, a bit of soft horizontal roll creasing, a small tear and "And You" written in ballpoint pen along the lower margin area, a few stress bends/light handling dings hiding within the image area and an elaborate hand-drawn (in red marker) sign reading "New Beatles- Pre Sold HERE" on the reverse side (see photo, this example was later obviously repurposed by a record store)... definitely a well-traveled example, that's for sure.

Conditional issues aside, still a fairly hard-to-find/uncommon mid-1968 multi-act festival poster from an absolutely jam-packed event.

On a side note, apparently there was a HUGE backstage pie fight between members of the Airplane, the Dead and others after the final show (see photo of a pie-smeared Jerry Garcia for reference).
