Original 1st printing 19 x 25" concert poster for the 9/21-23/1967 Grand Opening week of shows held at the Straight Theater in San Francisco, CA.
Performers listed include: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mount Rushmore, Mother Earth and the New Salvation Army Band (9/21), Country Joe & the Fish, the Charlatans, Blue Cheer and Freedom Highway (9/22) and the Grateful Dead, Big Brother & the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), Wildflower and Phoenix (9/23).
Art by Frank Melton, image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 200 (plate 2.220).
Medium-thick glossy stock poster is in decent (B/B-) condition; a moderate to heavy amount of edge/corner wear (scattered tack/pin holes, small edge tears, nicks, etc.), a couple of decent-sized horizontal tears in the right margin (taped on the reverse), a small staple wedge tear just below the "S" of "Straight", a series of semi-pronounced handling/pinch dings, stray pin-prick surface stains, light/subtle toning and a fair amount of moisture warp to the paper, otherwise fine.
Conditional issues aside, it is still a very presentable example of the Grand Opening poster from the legendary Haight-Ashbury ballroom. Virtually all of the biggest early San Francisco bands played the opening week, except for Jefferson Airplane (they were on a national tour).
Check out a WILD recording of the Dead backing the one and only Neal Cassady (jamming on "Lovelight" and general weirdness while Neal raps) on 9/23;
